Deaf Students: A Linguistic Minority in Higher Education

The presentation combines research with my experiences as a Deaf student in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Masters program, that places an emphasis on the profession of student affairs, at the University of Utah. My experience is voiced through research that highlights how student affairs practitioners are lacking an understanding of the obstacles faced by Deaf students in higher education settings. A historical overview of Deaf students, Identity Development (Glickman, 1993) through lens of Critical Race Theory (Yosso, 2005, Delgado, R. & Stefancic, J, 2001, Solórzano, D.,1997,1998, Solorzano, D., Ceja, Miguel, & Yosso, Tara.,2000), Retention (Tinto, 1993) and best practices is discussed.
